# I suffered every woman’s nightmare when 'plumber' raped me as I begged for mercy

LYING in agony on her sofa, tears dripping down her face, Mandy Gilchrest wondered if her terrifying ordeal would ever be over.

Hours earlier she’d opened her door to ‘plumber’ Kevin Wyatt, 41, who had been doing odd jobs around her house. After talking her through his work, he unexpectedly held a steak knife to her throat and forced her out of her wheelchair. Then, over the course of four hours – and while she helplessly begged him for mercy – he raped her. Twice.

“It’s every woman’s worst nightmare,” says unemployed Mandy, from Manchester. 

“He was polite and friendly. I felt I had nothing to fear from him. I couldn’t have been more wrong.

“I thought I was safe and sound with a man who’d been in my house two days before – but he turned out to be a cruel human being.”

Mandy – who has been disabled since childhood, following a breech birth – has been left in agonising pain following the June 2025 attack.

And, due to a blood condition called Factor V Leiden which makes her blood more prone to clotting, Wyatt’s hand marks and the bruises he caused are still present on her skin which she says act as a chilling reminder of what he did to her.

“It’s a visual, lasting image of what he did to me,” she says. “It haunts me.”

Talking about the attack and the days leading up to it, she explained how Wyatt had been carrying out various odd jobs in her bathrooms. 

She’d had workmen doing jobs in her property on and off since November 2024 after her living room ceiling fell in due to a leaking pipe so “thought nothing of him”.

Mandy, 52, says: “He didn’t seem any different to any of the other workmen who have been around. I felt safe. We just had a general chit chat about what jobs needed to be done alongside the other worker.

“They didn’t stay for very long. He was polite, said please and thank you – I had no reason to fear him at all.”

		
						But a few days later, Wyatt turned up at her door at around 5pm asking if he could come in and get serial numbers for pipes he needed to continue the work the next day.

‘I felt like a ragdoll’

Mandy remembers: “I let him in and he went and he got the numbers. He then was talking me through what he was planning to do with the sink. I then offered him a can of Coke to which he agreed and as I turned my back to him it all began.”

Mandy recalls how Wyatt gripped her face, covered her mouth, and placed a steak knife against her throat.

She says: “I was terrified – it all happened so quickly. He was telling me to ‘shut up’ and ‘do as I was told’ so I wouldn’t get hurt. 

“It was at that point that I knew exactly what was going to happen. I was pleading with him, saying, ‘It doesn’t have to be like this’ and, ‘We can be friends’.

“I was saying anything to try and stop it.”

But it didn’t work and Wyatt continued his campaign of abuse.

“He pushed my keys and phone away so I couldn’t reach them,” Mandy, who has waived her right to anonymity to raise awareness of sexual abuse, recalls.

“I was helpless.”

Wyatt then pushed Mandy into her living room and told her to get out of her wheelchair and onto her sofa before assaulting her. “I felt like a ragdoll,” she says.

“He was still telling me to ‘shut up’ so I wouldn’t alert the neighbours – he was fully aware of what he was doing.

“At this point his eyes had glossed over, I have never seen anything like it before.”

Finally, around four hours later and having raped her again, Wyatt helped her get back dressed and held her hand while she used her special heart spray to help deal with chest pains caused by a heart condition.

Like a horror movie

“Strangely he was friendly but didn’t apologise,” she says.

“It was like I was watching a horror movie, it didn’t feel real. Scenarios were running through my head which I didn’t want to happen yet they did.”

Eventually they walked to a cashpoint, and Wyatt made her withdraw £120, before they returned to Mandy’s home and he locked her inside.

Mandy recalls he didn’t leave for another hour until around 9pm.

She then called her sister who then contacted Greater Manchester Police (GMP).

Wyatt went on the run and was arrested on suspicion of attempted theft by a neighbouring police force but provided false details. Once in custody, his real details were established, and he was taken into custody by GMP.

In November last year, Wyatt, of no fixed address, appeared at Manchester Crown Court where he was jailed for a minimum of 12-and-a-half years after pleading guilty to two counts of rape, robbery, false imprisonment, and threatening a person with a knife.

Mandy learnt he had a previous conviction for rape in 2010, having put a sock in his victim’s mouth and a pillow over her head.

“I have lived in my house for 13 years and now I hate living here – I can no longer go into my living room at all,” she says.  

“I can’t have anyone stand behind me out of fear they have a knife. “I don’t know if I will ever be the same. If it were my choice he wouldn’t be able to leave prison as he is an evil man.

“I wouldn’t now have to live in pain and suffering following his actions – something needs to change. I thought I was safe in my own home – I couldn’t have been more wrong.”

At his sentencing Manchester Crown Court heard Wyatt pretended to be a plumber.

“For months afterward she was still bleeding,” Judge Alan Conrad KC said.

Talking directly to Wyatt he said: “She is often tearful. You caused injury to her limbs and body when you manhandled her. She faces surgery. She has been severely psychologically affected and fears staying at home and going out.”

Mandy is currently crowdfunding to raise money for a stair lift.
