# Blaze destroys 2 mobile homes, car at Poconos nudist resort, fire chief says

A late-night fire Thursday tore through a remote Poconos resort, destroying two mobile homes and leaving firefighters battling flames for hours.
Franklin Township Volunteer Fire Company Chief Lynn Diehl told lehighvalleylive.com crews were called just after 11 p.m. to Sunny Rest Resort, a clothing-optional property and campground near Palmerton.
Crews found two mobile homes and a car ignited with spreading flames, she said. Investigators believe the initial cause was from a furnace in one of the torched mobile homes, she said.
There were no reported injuries and everyone escaped safely on their own, the fire chief said.
Water was hauled in by tanker trucks. Efforts were hampered by live electrical wires until PPL representatives arrived to help “de-energize the area,” Diehl said.
Seven other agencies responded from Aquashicola/Lower Towamensing; Bowmanstown; Palmerton; Parryville; and East Penn Township. Walnutport Fire Department also was requested to bring in a Rapid Intervention Team to support firefighter safety.
It took crews upward of three hours to fully extinguish the flames, Diehl said.
Franklin Township fire officials continue to investigate the blaze, however Diehl said she expects it to be accidental and nothing suspicious was found.
Sunny Rest Resort launched in 1945. The sprawling property includes over 190 acres of rolling hills, partially wooded grounds and panoramic views. Accommodations include rooms, campsites and day visits with various amenities, according to the resort’s website.
Representatives of Sunny Rest Resort didn’t immediately return a request for comment Friday afternoon about the incident.
